The mirror had always been on the hall wall.
It was there so she could glance at herself.
A quick look before she answered the door.
Then one day it showed too much,
Too much, not how she thought she looked
But deep laughter lines, the turkey neck, rheumy eyes.
So she took it down, shoved it behind a book case
Immediately she was back to her youth
Firm neck, bright eyes and smooth cheeks.
Who needs the truth she thought,
As she hobbled to open the door.

ReplyDeleteIn my grandmothers house her father removed all the mirrors "To stop them becoming too vain" - now I think I realise the truth in his actions!
isn't this the truth? I have become expert at having a mirror right in front of me and never taking a glance.

wonderful! We can always put away the mirror but the reflection remains does it not? I like this very much!
